WTN: You wouldn't believe...

by John Treder » Sat Sep 20, 2008 10:28 pm

...it's its eighth birthday.
I bought several bottles of this in February 2004 at the Folie a Deux winery for $5 each. It was a second label that didn't take off, and they were dumping the remains.

Red Robin Lane (Folie a Deux) Zinfandel 2000, Fiddletown

The Real Thing. Dark, dark blackberry color, strong but smooth tannin, lots of length. Ripe, yes. Goopy, no. You wouldn't believe 15.5% alcohol. I was surprised when I looked.
When I opened the first bottle in April '04 I noted, "Drink 2006-2010." Well, I drank my last two in 2008, and had I had a couple more, I'd be holding them for a year or two. They aren't "old" yet, by any means.

John - Do you know if that's back when Scott Harvey was making the wine?

I don't remember the name of the winemaker - I do remember that the tasting room gal said the winemaker had roots in Amador County.
It was a nice, quiet afternoon and there was time to chat a bit, and the tasting room was in a comfortable old 1920s farmhouse, and you could look out on vineyards and hills.
All the reasons I like going up to the wine country and poking around.
