Yet another ESJ Note

by Redwinger » Mon Sep 22, 2008 10:39 am

2007 Edmunds St John, Heart of Gold (White), El Dorado County

Blend of 54% Grenache Blanc and 46% Vermentino. (Co-fermented as I understand it). I don't know where Steve gets his inspiration for these whacky blends, but this one works big time.

Very clear to slightly pale color. The crispness/acidity is quite vervy/nervous and I like it just fine that way. Touch of lemon, minerals/slate/flint (smoke?). I could go on but what's the point, as I think NJ summed it up nicely: "I really like this wine".

Paired with grilled chicken but I could see this accompaning a wide variety of foods.

20 Bucks well spent.

Bill, that touch of smoke is explained on Steve's web page in his winemaking notes. He details the procedure quite well, and the smoke is explained where he says the wine was transferred with all lees into a stainless tank. IMO extended contact with lees often/usually give off a smoky quality that I am fond of.
