WTN: 2006 Saisons de Beauchene Gigondas

by Brian K Miller » Mon Sep 22, 2008 1:35 pm

Friday night with bread, cheese, and olives at Wine Styles.

This wine is a sniffer-what a gorgeous savory nose of garrigue and fruit. Delicious. If I had to pick a single wine region, it might well be the Rhone Valley. 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah. A bit of heat because of the 14.5% abv, but not out of line. Some funk and savory notes on the palate, but this is definitely a Grenache wine. Nice lean strawberry fruit, somewhat muted at this young age. Despite the heat, fairly smooth sipper. Maybe a shortish finish?. A nice wine, indeed. 89+ points. Would love to try this is five years???

Prefer to their Cotes du Rhone. The village pedigree matters here.

Wasn't there a time not so long ago when Gigondas was hip? I know we just got through summer, but I haven't seen much about Gigondas in a long, long time.

I might have to remedy that soon.

Well...saying "Gigondas" is just fun to me. It's like a sneeze! Say it out loud without cracking a smile.

I like to say it with a Japanese accent...but, that's just me.
