WTN: Bassetti in honor of the Basset

by Dale Williams » Mon Sep 29, 2008 10:56 am

We are doting dog owners, and every year have a birthday tea for Lucy the Basset Hound. Saturday afternoon was rained out, and it wasn't looking much better for Sunday. It was raining at 1 as we decided what the hell and called people to say it was on, but by time party was to begin at 2 it had stopped, and by 2:30 sun was peeking out. Pugs, a LhasaPoo, and an English Bulldog joined the celebration, but the Saturday cancellation we lost the poodle, retriever, and Yorkies, with their wine drinking owners. So no wine, but I opened the planned thematic bottle with dinner (ribeye steaks, salad, green beans, and baked potato). The 2003 Edmunds St. John "Bassetti Vineyard" Syrah (San Luis Obispo County) is an excellent albeit juvenile bottle. At first it showed lots of fruit, but still overshadowed by the acidic and tannic structure. About an hour after opening it was less dominated by the stucture, though still firm. Both dark (blackberry) and red (raspberry) fruit notes, some smoke, pepper, a little earth. The fruit is kept lively by a really nice acidic spine. The size let it stand up well to the steak, but I'm going to save my remaining bottles for a while. Wish I had some of the 2005. A-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Come to Indy...the local shop seems to have a good supply available, including a case with my name on it. Unfortunately, the "Indiana Wine Nazis" frown on retailer shipping.

Happy birthday to Lucy! You're a good daddy.

She appreciates the good wishes!
Bill, NY doesn't seem to have. and I'm not coming to IN anytime soon. Maybe I should try to work out a storage agreement with Dr Lipton.
There are a couple places that list online. One in CA doesn't ship to NY. Other (OR) does, but I'm really trying to stick to stores I know. May have to break down.

Steve, I contacted Steve E, but apparently he doesn't ship to NY (probably because he has a NY distributor).
David, that sounds like an idea. I'd be happy with just a couple '05s, will see if I can come up with a list of things you might be interested in. Thanks

I will figure out where the 2005s are (I think they are off-site thus safe) & put two aside.

Very nice. Will come up with some good choices for you. No hurry, we've got years before they're mature! :)

Dale,
I have a few '05s (from Steve E) but could easily pick you up some and *ahem* find some way of getting them to you. PM me if you're interested. And Happy Birthday, Lucy!!! I hope that she got some steak. Any photos?

Missed this. Might be the easiest way, unless David feels he has too much ESJ and wants to trade as a backdoor way around his wine buying moratorium.

It's not an entirely altruistic offer: it'd give me an excuse to buy some of the Parmalee-Hill that I passed on when dealing with Steve.

Dale, I have (I think) 4 of the 2005 Bassetti, and Steve himself told me they were 20-30 year wines. I think you have time!
