WTN: 36th Parellelo Nero D'Avola Shiraz 2006

by Bruce Hayes » Wed Oct 01, 2008 7:02 pm

Sicilia
Fratelli Martini Secondo Luigi

Dark red in the glass.

Spicy nose.

Medium weight, very tangy, cherry, raspberry, spicy, currants, red licorice, round and full in the mouith, turning dry and rather thin toward the end.

Drying finish.

I bought this wine because I was intrigued by the grape combination. While the wine was "okay" I confess to being a bit disappointed as I had anticipated a more dramatic wine.

Purchased at $8.80 (Canadian).

Bruce, can you ask a 9-Loonie wine to bring you much thunder?

Firriato makes a Nero & Syrah blend that costs nearly twice as much and I was
similarly disappointed. I enjoyed their simple Nero d'Avola much better (which was cheaper, too)

Fair point, but, yes, I have had some sub-$10 wines that rocked me. I guess, as I said, I expected a bit more heft from a wine featuring these two grapes. For the first few glasses, all I pretty much got was funny tasting water, then the flavours started peeking out.

Bob in the archives again....>

Mark, just about to give the`03 from Firriato a while in the decanter. Will post some thoughts over on Wine Focus as we studied Syrah in February.
