WTN: 1999 Vieux Lazaret CdP

by Jenise » Sat Oct 04, 2008 1:27 pm

Still unable to divorce myself from the Southern Rhone since Coop's tasting last month, I chose a 1999 Vieux Lazaret from Chateneuf du Pape to accompany fresh herb-crusted grilled turkey schnitzels with broasted potato wedges. I have to say, among the 15 or so wines we've sampled from this area lately, this is by far the weakest entrant so far in the contest for my affections. Medium-to-light reddish orange color shows age. On the nose, brett and a most unusual aroma of toasted bandaids. In the mouth, there's sweetly mature grenachiness with a bit of herbal tea, but it's unsufficient compared to the acidity, and it quickly enough rewards my prediction that it's going to crash before we're done. Neither of us finishes a second glass.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

WOW. Don't ya just hate it when this happens?
I'm not familiar with this producer, but that seems like a mighty big tumble for a 1999 CdP. Sounds like possible heat damage in conjunction with an overall flawed bottle. Again, just guessing as I have never tasted any wine from this producer.

I wasn't familiar either. It didn't taste cooked so much as odd, though excess heat activating the brett could well be a factor. Mostly it just seemed long in the tooth.

Jenise,

I really like this producer...but I hadn't had the 1999. Had the 2001 and thought it was good though and just recently had a younger one (maybe 2003) and I thought that was good as well, except for being a bit hot.

Even though I really love CdP, I have to say that I haven't tasted a whole lot of different ones, so maybe I can not compare it to good CdP. I have been drinking CdR instead because of the price...but maybe I should seek some better CdP.
