Burgundy Advice?

by Rahsaan » Sun Oct 05, 2008 10:20 pm

Am looking to buy a bottle of Burgundy that is slightly above my usual price range so am wondering if anyone has insight on which of these might be likely to show well and be a nice bottle of wine in two weeks time.

I realize that even though this is above my usual price range, it is not quite up into Mindblowing Burgundy Range, so I'm not expecting life-altering fireworks.

But, a good bottle of pleasure would be nice.

Interesting set of choices. The 2000 vintage was downtrodden by the popular critics (Burghound hadn't reached his peak yet) but offers earlier drinking pleasure than most. So the Clair CSJ sounds like a good possibility.

I liked Maume in the mid-90s a lot, but have not tried their stuff since the '96 vintage.

Unless you are certain you don't mind the 2004 "herbal" element I would not go that way.

An '02 Volnay should be very good, but likely to be undeveloped.

That's all likely very little help. Of course you could consult some of the DC Burg experts (Nelson, Cooper...).

Hopefully you can find someone who has tasted these wines. But I'd say the best bets for drinking now would be the 2000 Bruno Clair CSJ, followed by the Maume. 2000 isn't a great vintage, but lots of nice wines drinking well now.

Thanks, the Clair was my leading choice of those 4, but none of them were thrilling and the responses I've gotten have confirmed that.

Will probably look for something else. Oh well..
