WTN: '07 Dr L, I still like it (where's my beef?)

by Dale Williams » Tue Oct 07, 2008 4:51 pm

Last night Betsy made a few recipes from her favorite vegetarian cookbook, Lord Krishna's Cuisine. Glazed carrots (turmeric, cardamom, coriander), spiced creamed spinach ("Malai sak"), and a
rice and pea pilaf with almonds. Not a menu to risk an expensive wine on, I contemplated cheap bubbly, but went with cheap Riesling, The 2007 Loosen "Dr. L" Riesling (Mosel) did ok with a tough job. I picked up a few more of these at $7 a bottle, and at that price it's a total steal (it's fine QPR at the more normal $10). Best vintage in several years, light, crisp, limey citrus with some sweet peach. Nice acidity, good length. I'm not looking for complexity with a cheap wine for Indian food, but this holds interest. B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Hi Dale,

Have you tried Sherry with that kind of meal? I like it as a change of pace. (I confess, when I saw the subject line, I saw L d'Or -- I know, I have a problem...)

Be careful, Dale. Redwinger will insult your Dr. L by calling it "pear juice". His palate is not tuned finely enough to appreciate the wonders of "Dr. L". You and I on an elevated tasting plain.

Cliff,
I frankly fail the test to be a full fledging geek. I confess that Sherry just doesn't appeal to me (nor does vin jaune), I'll always try, but seldom buy.

I'd say in previous vintages Dr L's strongpoint has generally been price, but '07 is interesting on its own./

I love Riesling in all shapes and sizes, but I often find it overwhelmed by spice. I think oxidative wines often do better in those difficult situations, but then I like them to begin with. I'll have to try some Dr L, though; I'm always on the lookout for affordable wines.

Best,
Cliff
