WTN: '03 St. Innocent Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir

by David M. Bueker » Wed Oct 15, 2008 8:14 pm

From half bottle with half a duck. Afl...!

Overall a good, but not great showing. There's plenty of well-balanced red fruit on entry & while the aromatics are not particularly developed, they are not candied or over the top. My one quibble is a bit of heaviness and alcoholic presence on the mid-palate and finish. This is really close to being fantastic pinot, but just does not quite get over the line. I would drink now before the alcohol takes over.

Thanks for the note. We just went through the Shea and 7 Springs together but I haven't rounded up my notes. I struggled with both and worry about most of my relatively few 2003 Oregons.

I am actually more worried about the '04s.

There's not much there. I already find some of them to be lacking any fruit.

Interesting. I need to roll through some more of them in the near future. I like the vintage ... not great but I like it.

I was visiting their new facility a couple of weeks ago and ran across Vlossak outside walking between buildings. He was carrying a new pair of boots.

At any rate I ended up getting some of the Anden '06. I like it. Ain't gonna be anymore.

The loss of Anden is very sad.

But I trust Mark will make wonderful wine from Momtazi.

Have you had wine from Momtazi before? I think I had the Mysara but just a taste. I heard the 07 SI Momtazi was great out of barrel. Haven't received my 06s yet but I do look forward to trying them ... despite the vintage. I am really looking forward to the 07s.

I also like the young Justice vineyard and hope that continues to develop.

What is worse is the loss of Seven Springs. The Momtazi is good now, but Mark is pretty excited about it's potential as the vines mature.
