WTN: Finca El Retiro Reserva Especial Tempranillo 2004

by Bruce Hayes » Thu Oct 16, 2008 6:50 pm

Mendoza

Dark purple, bordering on black, in the glass.

A big nose, smoky, chocolate, tarry and roasted notes.

Quite tangy, medium to heavy weight, intense and rich, thick, black cherry, raspberry, cranberry, drying, blood pudding, floral, bitter chocolate, becoming drying and bitter toward the end.

With time, the wine became a bit firmer and drying.

A drying, tangy finish.

An odd, but impressive, wine.

Purchased at $14.95 (Canadian).

Bruce, Are you sure on the variety? I've had Malbec from them. Did not realize that tempranillo was also available. The malbec has been available for $11.99. Good producer, not a lot of info available on them.

Yup, it's Tempranillo (at least that's what it states on the label. One can argue if this is varietally true).

I have previously had a Bonarda and a Tempranillo from this producer.

This indeed is tempranillo (in Argentina, a.k.a. 'tempranilla').
