I think I'd be a little more stringent than you, David. If anyone reputable was teaching about wine, I'd require a bit more. I'd even expect them to be able to spell the key words of what they are supposed to be knowledgeable about.
But that's in a formal educational setting. Hey, if wine geeks couldn't bloviate about things, and pretend they know more than they do, that would take the fun out of it for most of them.
