WTN: Pelee Island Gamay Noir/Zweigelt 2006

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Oct 26, 2008 2:37 pm

VQA Ontario.

Good cherry red in the glass.

Smoky, cherries on the nose.

Soft and round in the mouth, juicy cherry, raspberry, strawberry, currants and cranberry, spicy, red licorice, very floral, quite rich, tangy, medium bodied.

Drying on the finish, with some sweet fruit coming in later.

A delicous wine and a Paul B recommendation. Thank you Paul.

Purchased at $11.95 (Canadian).

Bruce,

It's a shockingly good wine for an '06 - I didn't place much confidence in that vintage for reds from around here, given how cold and drab (and rainy) September seemed to me then. But when I tried this wine, I was fully convinced that they had a winner. And the blend, atypical in every way, works well too. The Zweigelt in particular gives that unmistakable peppery spice that's so very appetizing.
