WTN: 1988 Vietti Barolo Riserva Rocche

by Paul Winalski » Wed Oct 29, 2008 2:16 pm

When young, this was harsh and unapproachable, as is the case with most Barolos. 20 years on, it is fully mature and made a delightful accompaniment last night to homemade porcini ragu and fettuccine. Brick-red color. The wine has a classic nebbiolo nose, very fragrant and complex. In the mouth, there is a lot of mature fruit in perfect balance with acidity and still some (now soft) tannins. Long finish. Top-notch classic Barolo. Double curly larry, perhaps with a hint of moe still (this is, after all, a Barolo).

Paul,

I hope you are well. I'm going to try to spend some more time here going forward. Like many others I'm a struggling member of the wine probabtion support group.

Lou, I just hope he has his kids out of school (and after school sports etc.) If so, he now has time to spend talking wine and other things here.

The Vietti sounds wonderful, as one would expect. But I wouldn't say that most Barolo these days is harsh when young, although most of it was when that wine was made.

Bob,

My 4 year term as President of a local youth sports group has ended so I'm hoping to have more "wine time". My oldest two boys are now in high school so they drive themsleves to practice and I don't coach them!

I hope all is well with you.
