Mike Dunne leaving the Sacramento Bee

by Mike Filigenzi » Thu Nov 20, 2008 9:54 am

I know there are at least a few of you here who regularly read Mike Dunne's columns on food and wine in the Sacramento Bee. Mike has announced in his blog that he's accepted a buyout from the Bee and that he'll be leaving the paper at the end of the week.

Hope he keeps writing.

That's a shock. And yet I recently read, god knows where, that wine and food writing are the most vulnerable to cutbacks at large newspapers. In fact, while I typed that sentence I'm remembering that it was in fact a friend who sent that to me along with the comment that wine and food writing is one of the few and best reasons LEFT to be a subscriber.

He's the latest in a long line of really good writers to leave the Bee as it slowly falls apart. Hard to believe that they used to have people like Pete Dexter writing weekly columns for that paper.

When you learn how few younger people read any part of a newspaper each day, you realize it's just a matter of time that they will cease to exist. I love the NY times in the morning with a cup of coffee. One of the great things of being retired. :D

Well people do still like to consume news, just in different forms.

I don't have a tendency to read news in depth on the internet. It's just not as comfortable to my mind as reading a newspaper. I suppose I could read books on line but I don't for the same reason.
Actually I've always envied you because you've been able to avoid work at a much younger age then I could manage.

I agree that it is more comfortable to read paper than online, and I don't read books on the computer either. But most newspapers are far from in depth and whether online or on paper they can more or less be quickly scanned. Even periodicals like the New Yorker are fine for me to read online because every word is not important and it doesn't require as much concentration as a novel, for example. Those I cannot read online.

Of course even this is a generational/style thing as among my acquaintances I am in the minority with such a pro-online stance.

Ah, but the trick is knowing beforehand which words are important, and which are not important.

And then, of course, there's that all important sequencing issue. :D

Got an e-mail from Mike ystrday. He plans to continue writing on a free-lance basis, but I gather not for the SacBee. So he's not riding off into the sunset, fortunately.

The New Yorker is a far cry from The New York Times. The print edition.

Not sure of your point here.

The NY Times is much less dense than the New Yorker. Much easier to skim.

We also subscribe to the New Yorker. Never looked if they have an on line site. Tone of voice is missing from the internet, makes a difference.

I think quite a few wine-writers in the UK could learn from Mr.D.
Some of the writings over there are quite aweful, but then the general punter shops for wine at his local supermarket so therein lies the problem!!

When did you get old enough to retire Lou? I am shocked, I say, SHOCKED! Hope you and Betty Lu had a great Thanksgiving day.

I would like to accept that as a compliment Bob but I would check the calender and my watch. They say loss of time and date memory is the first sign of dementia, I forgot what the second thing is!
Hope you and your family had a great holiday. Lou
