WTN: 2002 Nigl Grüner Veltliner Privat

Served as a starter for a 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape tasting, this wine nearly stole the show. Cracked white pepper, warm herbs, toasted bread & hard tree fruit (think a somewhat unripe pear) all blended together into a seamless whole that was rich yet elegant. There's just a beginning of secondary development, as a hint of smokiness creeps in around the edges of the wine. Fantastic now & should hold/improve for years to come. Delicious! :D

The '98 Piri Privat was brilliant a year ago. Remarkably complex and intense yet balanced wine.

Thanks for the info. I no longer have any Gruner Veltliner Privat in the cellar, but there's some 1995, 1997 and 1999 Gruner Veltliner Alte Reben down there. It's likely time to drink up. Yum!
