WTN: '05 Dom Grand Veneur CnP

by wrcstl » Tue Nov 25, 2008 9:59 am

Opened last night and was very impressed. Deep dark fruit, very structured, mouth filling and little dose of tannins on the finish. This wine will only get better and in 5 years imagine a great drink. A Kysela import, bought 6 bottles for $15/. Called my wine store this morning to see if any was left but they only now have the '06. '05 continues to amaze and everytime I open one and then look for more they are gone.

Good news! I have a few, though I haven't tasted one yet. Great price, btw, was that a local steal or are you buying auction now?

Regular price at my local wine shop. It is $15.99 and less 10% for case discount. IMHO Kysela offers the most "value" wines as an importer. Good wine but I personally would not be in any hurry as I think it will get better. I tend to drink my wines with some age on them so feel free to ignore my opinion.

You're not alone. And this is why you never see me post on Rhones--I didn't start buying them early enough, and now I'm waiting on the ones I have.

Walt, I want to verify that you got Chateauneuf Du Pape for $15 per? Locally even the Cotes Du rhone is going for this amount of money. That would almost be worth a trip to St. Louis for.

Bob,
Realize Kysella does a CdR but it was CnP and $14.39 is listed in my cellar inventory ($16 less 10%). Unless I made a mistake that is the price. My local wine shop does a lot of business with Kysella, has low mark ups and has an exclusive.

Grand Veneur is a darn fine producer, Walt, and as I'm sure you know, even their CdR is one of the most "Chateauneuf-like" Rhones around for a whale of a QPR.

I am wondering what the '06 tastes like. Assume it is a little more forward and need to try a bottle. The '05 will sit quietly for at least another 3 years.

It sure sounds to me that you got a whale of a deal Walt. The Grandeur reserve (gold label) CdR sells for about $15 dollars here. Fran's suggested price for the CndP white for the 2006 & 2007 is $45per. the red for 2006 is $50. there is a higher tier that goes for any where between $70 and $100 depending of vintage. If I lived there, I do think I would return for a few more. Does your wine shop have a web presence?

I already went back for more and it is all gone. I could have made a mistake but it was definitely the CnP and I would not have paid $50. Maybe my wine store priced it incorrectly.

Walt, just checked my inventory and see I paid $19 on Wine Commune but show retail at $34. And a quick peek at Winezap shows a range of $32-38. If you paid, $16, you got a steal.

Jenise, I was in one of my BAWS this afternoon and checked on this wine. They had the 2005 vtg, and it was priced at $49.99 for a 750ml bottle. That price is probably in line with other CndP's here or anywhere in the region. As I said to Walt in a post above, the importers suggested price is $50. I know that we can often find the importers suggested sliced b y discount retailers, but that is a whale of a slice to $16.

Well, the Les Origines bottling typically runs $50 and up, but across the country the regular CdP is currently priced in the $30's. Is Kentucky always that over-priced?

I will try to find time tomorrow to run by this store and recheck the label, but I was pretty sure it is their entry level CndP. Robert Jones MS is the national sales manager for Kysela Pere et Fils LTD, and he is usually ready to talk anytime his phone rings, plus he will answer emails promptly, so I will look here and if need be, check with Robert.

If Bob is talking about the store I think he is, it is (in my opinion) on the pricey side in its Louisville store and apparently even more so at its home base in Lexington.

This wine was being advertised for $29.99 on a 20%-off Black Friday sale at Zachy's in Westchester in the NY Times today; that's not Kentucky ;) , but I think I could find it for around $35 to $40 here.

Robin, as the old Gallo commercial said, "Thank you for your support". Yes it was the Liquor Barn I was speaking of, but I damn with faint priase. I can still buy the 2005 Ridge Lytton Springs zinfandel for $20.49 which is a mismark, and I "ain't" telling them again. :) I didn't get out there today, maybe tomorrow, or maybe next week.

And that was in what year, 1948? :) You could well be right, that's how I got '94 Fonseca for about $20.
