WTN: Clisson trumps Viking

by Rahsaan » Thu Nov 27, 2008 11:57 am

A friend of mine opened the 1990 Gauthier-Lhomme Domaine du Viking Vouvray Tendre because he knew I liked Vouvray and he was excited by something with more age than he usually sees. Not wanting to be a downer I nonetheless told him not to expect much. And I was right. I found it simple sweet and boring although he seemed to enjoy the difference in texture from recently released wine. I guess it serves a purpose in that sense, but for me it is not really worth my time.

I was much happier when he reached back into the refrigerator to pull out the 2005 Pépière Muscadet Granite de Clisson. This was my first taste of the wine and the purity and focus was immediately evident and refreshing in comparison to the Viking. Light and delicate palate (which I am told by DL is to be expected from the soil) although definitely with power and such lovely focus. Would love to have some of this myself but a friend with a case in storage is the next best thing.
