WTN: Wines with Turkey (Jadot, Clavelier, Christoffel)

by David M. Bueker » Fri Nov 28, 2008 11:36 am

After cooking all day it was a joy to sit down with the Thanksgiving meal. My folks were (and still are) up to visit, and we had some lovely wines out of the cellar to accompany the bird, potatoes, stuffing, butternut squash & homemade rolls.

2001 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese (Mosel)
Barely even developing yet, this wine was nevertheless quite open after about 20 minutes of air. There's loads of tree fruit, warm spice & honeyed notes, and the whole package is completely drinkable...no...slurpable. It's just wonderfully delicious with years and years of life before maturity & then years and years after that.

1999 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
Opened too soon, but we soldiered on with a decanter. After about an hour of air the wine stated to show all its spice, dark red fruit and earthy elements. It's also a bit minty (surprise), and the overall package, while young, is delicious.

1999 Louis Jadot Echezeaux
Obviously I should not have opened this yet, but it did show great breed, class and lots of fruit, especially after an hour plus in a decanter. Elegant & powerful at the same time, this needs another 5-10 years in the cellar. It certainly has grand cru stature.

With 01 Christoffel there is also the sentimental aspect of enjoying wines that are no longer made

Sounds great.

Why did you open it? If I remember correctly you have a few other options in that cellar of yours?

The Christoffel wines are still made. Hans-Leo is still an active part of the estate, despite his involvement with Emayel.

As for the Jadot, I have several & really wanted to know what I had (never tasted that wine before).

Yes, but do you buy the wines?

I haven't tasted the most recent vintages but my understanding was that they were far off the former glory.

Nice lineup - but just one Riesling? Sheesh! :P

Rahsaan - I don't have the reference points David does with pre-Monchoff Christoffel, but I've found some of the recent wines - particularly the Erdener Treppchen Spatlesen from 06 and 07 to be quite stunning. I'm not sure how they compare with the past vintages - but on their own those wines are quite superb. I've also enjoyed a couple of the recent Urziger Wurzgarten Auslesen (02 and 05), and I'd reckon that those wines are definitely worth buying.
