On Friday Dom Ruinart presented a terrific selection of sparkling wines in the TOP restaurant “First Floor”/Hotel Palace in Berlin under the leadership of Maximilian Claus and Panos Kakaviatos. Dom Ruinart located in Reims and founded in 1729 is the longest established champagne house. Meanwhile Ruinart is a member of LVMH. The tasting clearly proved that Dom Ruinart produce TOP champagne with a long-aging potential.

Amuse bouche

Ruinart Blanc de Blancs
Good entry-level champagne with fine flavors of apples, pears, blossoms and a charming creamy texture. A few minutes later a solid minerality is emerging in the glass. Based on its freshness&easy-drinking style, simply the perfect Apèritif-Champagne.

1998 Dom Ruinart
100% Chardonnay, Grand Cru grapes with 66% from the Cote des Blancs and 34% north of the Montagne de Reims vineyards. A floral bouquet with a crisp freshness and a distinctive minerality on the palate. Solid champagne, but lacked of complexity&length&finesse in comparison with the `96

1996 Dom Ruinart
WOW, tasted more like a Puligny Montrachet or Chablis Grand Cru. The colour is much brighter than the 98 colour. Awesome perfume of blossoms, lilac and hazelnut. Shows great precision with a titanic length and complexity. Pure ELEGANCE
Flavors of biscuit, blossoms, nuts and a chalky minerality. Will show its true outstanding quality in 20 years. Buy!
96+/100

Tartar of veal with sautée scallop and veal head vinaigrette

1993 Dom Ruinart
The first bottle had a hint of cork, but we opened another bottle. Much better, fresh&lively and straight forward. Offers great drinking pleasure. Certainly the `98 will develop in direction of the `93. Would be a great partner with oyster.

1990 Dom Ruinart
Here we have a baroque version of the `96. Shows the same outstanding length, complexity and elegance, but the flavors are more opulent and matured. Flavors of aged apples, caramel, blossoms and a loooooong finish. Great future. A Foie gras or lobster would be also a great partner for the `90 and `88 Dom Ruinart.

1988 Dom Ruinart
What a exotic beauty! I have to confess it was really difficult to vote for the best champagne in this flight. The `90 showed clearly more complexity, but the `88 was such sexy and seductive. Exotic flavor profile of vanilla cookies, espresso, figs and orange peel. And a wonderful lingering finish. I didn´t want to put down my glass. Simply decadent delicious......
94/100

1979 Dom Ruinart Rosé Magnum
One of the best champagne I´ve ever drunken. Out of this world this `79. Tasted more like an aristocratic red burgundy. Based on 84% Chardonnay and 16% Pinot Noir. Powerful body with sublime notes of wood strawberries, truffle, earthy elements and unbelievable young. Finish with no end! Great years ahead. WOTN
98/100

1985 Dom Ruinart Rosé Magnum
Light and easy-drinking style. Strawberry, truffle and offers great drinking pleasure at the moment.

1986 Dom Ruinart Rosé Magnum
Very closed.

Quince soup with curd and elder ice-cream

1990 Dom Ruinart Rosé Magnum
Nice freshness and elegance. Raspberry, strawberry and a convincing minerality. Excellent.

1996 Dom Ruinart Rosé
This `96 will be in the future as good as the `79. Brilliant depth and finesse. A basket of red fruits from the wood and great minerality. Big future.
95+/100

Cheers,
Martin

Quote "One of the best champagne I´ve ever drunken". A classic.

Great tasting - one house I've never seem much of 'round these parts. Must find some '96 if I can and give it a bash.

Thanks, Martin.
Cheers,

David

One of my early "older" Champagne experiences was with a 1979 Dom Ruinart. Lovely stuff. As with David L, Ruinart does not show up in my area all that much.

Guys,

as a Riesling-aficionado I have often some problems with white burgundy wines. Despite their greatness, I miss acidity and freshness.

But with these Dom Ruinart champagnes, I have the flavors of burgundy and the freshness of champagne. Perfect mix!

Cheers,
Martin

P.S. David, I strongly recommend you to buy 1996 Dom Ruinart
