2006 Selbach-Oster Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Beerenauslese
Opened just because my wife and I wanted to enjoy a lovely wine together in this holiday season. This certainly fit the bill with more layers than croissant dough & more complexity than molecular physics. Pineapple, brown sugar, vanilla, pastry cream, clove, honey, cherry, peach, overwhelming minerality & an element of clear, glacial stream from the purity of expression all combined into something that can only be described as an elixir. It's more than wine. Initially it's quite weighty in the mouth, but after a few seconds the acidity & purity of fruit just lift the wine from the palate. It disappears, leaving only a sense memory that haunts like a familiar ghost. Our half bottle was gone much too soon, though I doubt a magnum would have lasted much longer.

That sounds wonderful. I'm not surprised at how quickly the bottle got emptied. While I've had a few sweeter/BA-level ripeness wines from other producers that I found almost tiring to drink where one glass was quite often enough, the sweeter wines I've had from Selbach-Oster (mind you, haven't had any BAs from them - but I have no reason to doubt they'd be radically different from the sweet Auslesen I've had before) have had a sense of approachability and drinkability I've loved - their wines are almost too easy to drink, light on their feet without ever coming across as too heavy or ripe (as I've found with Loosen and some other producers who've made me a little gun-shy on very late harvested sweet wines).

Great wines inspire great notes.
