WTN: Paul Jaboulet Aîné Cornas 1998

I marinated some pieces of lamb in herbs and fried them quickly. I seem to enjoy such very simple dishes with good wines more than anything elaborate since it leaves more room for the wine to act almost as an ingredient in the dish itself!

I rarely see positive things said about Jaboulet except for the old, legendary vintages, but I just saw on CT that I had very positive things to say about the '99 Cornas in 2005. I seem to have bad taste, lol!

29,90€; 13% abv. The scent seems rather aged already with rye-bread and leafy notes, but it also seems a classic Cornas in its rugged, gravelly style. The fruit seems pure Syrah with its dark, olive and bacon aromas. Medium-full body, quite rugged still with wonderful, refreshing grip from the tannins, highish acidity for Rhône, quite long and mineral on the finish: seems less evolved than the scent! With air, it develops some lavender/floral notes but never loses its charming ruggedness. A very pleasurable wine.

I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.
