WTN: A pair of Tuscan reds over the holidays

1999 Altesino, Brunello di Montalcino.
The first time I have tried Altesino's Brunello, though I have tasted their Rosso a couple of times. Opened in New Year's Eve. Initially a bit tight, but then deep red fruit, especially cherries emerged after several minutes, backed by vanilla, tobocco, and hints of mushrooms. Long, lingering finish. Drinking well now, but still enough structure to keep for several years. Excellent. Purchased for about Euro 28 as I recall in a wine shop in Montalcino a few years ago. If I could buy Brunello at prices like this in Ontario, I'd buy a lot more.

1998 Villa di Capezzana Carmignano
My brother opened this on Christmas Eve...a bottle that I had bought him a few years earlier. 80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Maturing beautifully, with ripe dark cherries, and notes of dried fruit and herbs. Smooth tannin, a lingering finish. This wine seems to convey a warmth that says "Toscana". Just lovely. About $C27 I believe. I just bought a bottle of the '05 for $C32 and I am tempted to buy more.

Cheers,
Norm
