WTN: Juicy fruit Kabinett (07 Meulenhof)

by Dale Williams » Thu Jan 08, 2009 5:06 pm

Last night I made pork chops with a white wine/garlic/anchovy sauce, broccoli, shredded zucchini, and a salad; had them waiting when Betsy got home, along with the 2007 Meulenhof Erdener Treppchen Kabinett Riesling. OK, I've been grooving on the rather lean racy 2007 kabinetts, this isn't one. Plenty of plump sweetness, apples and papaya, a light herby note, more big Spatlese than sprightly Kabinett. More fruit than mineral, maybe not the style I most gravitate towards, but a nice friendly puppy of a wine. At under$15 this is a good value, but while I'm happy to own one more, not looking to buy more for stylistic reasons. B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Is this typical of Meulenhof's style?

No clue, really. I think I've tried a '90 Auslese and a '01 Kab, not enough to get a sense. But a TT import, so David should have an idea.

Sounds quite typical based on the other Meulenhofs I've tried. I like the producer a lot - Meulenhof in my book makes some amazing value wines that are really fun to drink, although a number of the wines I've tried from him have been very sweet/ripe for their pradikat. This isn't necessarily a complaint (especially if you know which ones to watch for) - his 06 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese was the only Beerenauslese I've bought at under $20 (that too in 750), and his 06 Erdener Treppchen Kabinett* (yes, one star Kabinett) was a cheap Auslese that was just fabulous with food and I'm trying to find more of it.

First of all let's leave 2006 out of the discussion, as the vintage is so beyond recognition as anything normal that it clouds discussion.

Meulenhof is indeed a fine QPR producer, but Stefan Justen (owner/winemaker) is dealing with a lot of young vines in the Treppchen right now due to fleurbereinigung, so the former complexity in his wines is suffering a bit, leading to a more forward, juicy style. The same problem is bedeviling the Merkelbachs a little bit with their Treppchen wines.

He does still have one old vine plot in the Treppchen, but that is usually the heart of his spatlese or auslese bottling. The 1998 Meulenhof Treppchen Spatlese is one of the great Riesling bargains of my life (from the plot of old vines).

Hmmm...I believe I have some of those myself. Sounds like a plan for tonight.
And happy new year to you and Laura.
