1996 Dr Loosen Urziger Würzgarten Auslese Goldkapsel

I picked up two 375ml bottles of this from a cellar clearance some years ago. The first one opened latein 2006, was full of youth and vigour. I opened the second one lat night, to find it has advanced a fair bit since then.

Taking on a pale gold colour now. The nose is at once pannacotta and lime marmalade to smell, somehow elegant and ripe at the same time. The palate is showing its first level of development - lime, faint whiff of toast, orange marmalade and a whiff of apricot too. Sweetness is more to the fore on this bottle than the last, and acid is starting to resolve. Lightly botrytised only, making this Goldkapsel a lighter dessert style. All quite linear, and doesn’t come across as terribly complex or long. Where is the Würzgarten spice? This was a nice enough after dinner drink, but somehow a touch boring.

Cheers

I find many of Loosen's wine's to lack excitement, Wizz. A bit like Burgundy - more misses than hits. Thanks for posting.

I'm surprised there wasn't any Wurzgarten character. Ernie does have good land in that site, though not to the same level as say Christoffel.

1996 is a strange year anyway, with things evolving in a herky-jerky sort of way, with no predictability of how they will eventually sort themselves out.
