WTN: Las Moras Black Label Shiraz 2005

by Bruce Hayes » Wed Jan 21, 2009 7:52 pm

San Juan, Mendoza

Dark purple in the glass.

Peppery on the nose.

Smooth in the mouth, spicy, black cherry, raspberry, chocolate, coffee, anise, medium weight, drying, turning a little shrill twoard the end. With time, the wine became tangier and a little hard.

Drying, raspberry and tangy on the finish.

A good wine that, I think, could benefit from a bit of aging.

Purchased at $15.95 (Canadian).

Bruce.... this producer (Finca Las Moras) makes a "reserve" blend called Mora Negra. In my view, the Mora Negra is one of the two best wine made in San Juan, its a blend of Malbec and Bonarda. The other member of this select group is the Finca Las Moras Gran Syrah, a very interesting microclimate blend of Syrahs from the best valleys in San Juan.... I wonder if you can seek these out in your area?

I did a quick look and the only other Las Moras that is currently available in Ontario is a 2005 Reserve Chardonnay.
