Grasso Barolo Runcot 2001?

by Joshua Kates » Sun Jan 25, 2009 9:40 am

Has anyone recently drunk this wine, or have experience more generally with Grasso's Barolos . I just uncorked one last night. It had a fantastic nose but even after nearly 2 hours, 1 of breathing, and 1 of decanting, it never really came around. Medium-bodied (which I can prefer), but flat, one-dimensional. It ended up being shipped during a cold spell, so that may account for it. But still, pretty disappointing.

Joshua,

I import Grasso's wine for CA. 'Runcot' is his best single-vineyard Barolo from an outstanding vintage, will age for 20++ years, and is probably not your best bet for near-term drinking. The '03 Barolos would probably be better for now.

That said, I am wondering if your 'flat, one-dimensional' could be slight corkiness.

Thanks, Oliver!
It didn't seem like corkiness to me. Maybe just in a dumb phase. But I'll definitely give it a rest!

Joshua,
I had the pleasure of visiting Elio Grasso in 2007 and tasted, among others, the 2001 Runcot there and I'd say that flat and one-dimensional would be the last words I'd use to describe it, as well as his other wines. I liked his wines a lot. In the 2001 Runcot I found a thick and sweet, but still fresh fruit. Quite a lot of coffee notes from new oak. Cherries and a touch of manure. The taste echoed the nose. Very fresh acidity with growing oakiness. Dark, sweet fruit. Strong tannins that that grew and became almost tongue-wrenching towards the end. A wine in a more modernistic style that his other Baroli. Needs more time, yes, but flat and one-dimensional, no, definitely not. I'm with Oliver, there must have been something wrong with your bottle.

Cheers,
Anders
