Has Anyone Noticed? (In Re the Screwcap/Cork Debate)

by Daniel Rogov » Thu Feb 05, 2009 3:24 pm

Has anyone noticed:

(a) When in public, on forums or in wine chat rooms, those who are in general opposed to the use of screwcaps are expressing nothing more than a personal opinion. Whether they (and I being one of this particular "they") are opposed for what they consider aesthetic reasons or even for reasons of what they consider tradition or sentimentality, their views are their own and they preach to no-one. More than that, although these people may have reached their own decisions, they are well aware that there will be exceptions to their rules.

(b) When in front of the same public, the vast majority of those in favor of screwcaps seem to be expressing what they have taken to be a revealed truth. In that, more than preaching to the as yet unconverted they tend to scoff (albeit often in the most ladylike or gentlemanly manner) at those who have yet to see the light, implying that their perceived "foes" are Luddites, fuzzy-headed romantics or, more simply opposed to the future.

Hmm.

As in A) I'm a good guy so this is how I define myself and B) they're not good guys, so this is how I define them? :D

As a definite B, I do not in any way claim to be "ladylike". And I'm certainly not much of a gentleman.

And since you earlier quoted Donne, I'll respond with an obscure Scots poet:

"O wadsome power the giftie gie' us, to see oursels as ithers see us"

From my point of view, I'd say your A) is simply stuck within the series of stages of denial. From your point of view, I'm willing to proceed in unseemly haste. Machts nichts.

Oh, and I find these interesting words and posts from someone who has repeatedly said (and this just since the beginning of the New Year) that he no longer intended to post, or to reply, or to engage in threads of this sort.

Just can't resist, can you?

There are two possible responses, both of which have validity:

(a) I am weak
(b) The devil made me do it

Do notice though that I am not getting into the discussion of which is "better". Only into the attitudes of those of us who take part in such discussions.......

Rogov,

My attitudes about cork and screwcaps are from being consistently "screwed" by cork. Perhaps it more a preaching from the highest mountain phenomenon.

Surely it is obvious that proponents of screwcaps are kicking against the status quo (i.e.corks) and need to make the case for a change.

(I cannot see by any stretch of my imagination how aesthetics come into pulling piece of tree bark out of a bottle, or why understand why someone who didn't intend posting on the subject again, did :)

I freely admit I am old and set in my ways. I don't like corked wines any better than anyone else. I freely admit the advantages of screwcaps are many. I like the convenience and especially the freedom from cork taint with screwcaps. Nevertheless, I will miss corks. They were part of the romance of wine to me. I will miss the civilized ritual of removing and inspecting the cork. I cannot imagine opening a bottle of champagne sealed with anything but a cork. But I can face the truth and am reconciled to the fact that corks are clearly on their way out. But so, in fact, am I, and I will be probably be gone from this sphere before corks totally disappear.

Or, as someone once said: There are two kinds of people: simple people and normal people.
I, myself, prefer wine that tastes good, which corked wine surely does not. As a producer, I don't wish to risk losing customers because of bottles spoiled by corks. of which even a few is too many. Interestingly (or not), my wife's nickname, growing up, was "Corky." :D

What Oliver said about what Glen and Steve said... squared.

Sorry, but I'm feeling the effects of a Mollydooker "Violinist" (15.5% alcohol), under screw cap.

PS: I think that Steve could solve this controversy if he would just ship some of his '07 Bone Jolly to Indiana!

Do you want a cork on your beer bottle?

There are a good number of bottle-conditioned beers that are closed with cork. Thankfully, I haven't yet run into any TCA problems (though I suspect I am not as sensitive as some).

Here's one I had during the Super Bowl last Sunday: Boulevard Double-Wide IPA. Came stoppered with a champagne-style cork. I liked it. 8)

As a rule, no. Just for the record though, an increasing number of beers from Belgium are indeed closed with corks, many of those comng in 750 cl. bottles.

Woot!! Please, Steve, let us know when this long-anticipated boon becomes reality. Much as I've enjoyed meeting you, local distribution beats hand importing your wines hands down. :P
