Question: wine shipped too cold?

by Joshua Kates » Fri Feb 06, 2009 11:05 am

I just received 3 bottles of the '04 Barthod Aux Beaux Bruns that were accidentally shipped too soon. The weather has been brutally cold here. I can detect no visible damage (I doubt they actually froze), but as they are a fairly subtle wines to begin with I am worried about their condition. Any advice? It would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh

In another post, I asked a question about the effects of cold temps on wine. I was assured that short of freezing, there would not be a problem with wine getting quite cold. I look forward to the answers of others.

Joshua, Hi.....

My own experience has been that wines shipped in quite cold conditions under which the wines have not actually formed ice have suffered no damage. What you may find are a few tartrate crystals that have settled on the bottom of the cork but those cause no short- or long-term harm whatsoever. My policy with wines subjected to severe cold has been to let them "rest and recouperate" from their trauma for a minimum of two months before I will open them.

Chuckling, albeit in pain, when I think that I'd much rather have my wines exposed to fairly sharp cold than to fairly sharp heat.

I'm with Jon and Daniel. I don't worry about cold, unless wine was subjected to truly frigid temperatutes where it might have frozen to extent of pushing out and compromising cork. As Daniel says, you might see some white tartrate crystals (generally on base of cork, occasionally free at bottom). That said, I try not to ship in brutal temps (or where there are extreme temps between origination and me), because if wine does freeze it can compromise cork. But generally then you'd see pushed or depressed cork, and probably seepage.

Joshua,

We received mutliple bottles of a wine which was shipped during the brutally cold weather a couple of weeks ago. The Italian red bottles were all but frozen on arrival. I was concerned, so I opened one up after letting it sit for a day. No problem with it all, other than it is too young to drink. I wouldn't be concerned.

well, at least you know the wine has been 'cold stabilized'.
