WTN: very nice basic Chinon

by Dale Williams » Fri Feb 06, 2009 12:08 pm

With marinated flank steak, a broccoli/red pepper salad, and a green salad, the 2006 Baudry Chinon. This is just the base bottling, about $16. Young but quite tasty, blackberries and black cherries with a light floral note and good length. Good acidity, firm but not hard tannins, this should probably age but I enjoyed last night. Plenty big enough to stand up to rare meat, but handles the peppery spice of the marinade too. Accidental match, but hard to imagine anything doing better. A fine wine for the price, B++

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Bernard Baudry, I presume; there is also Christophe.

I am a little puzzled about this bottling without a lieu-dit or other name; here are those with which I am familiar http://www.chinon.com/vignoble/Bernard- ... _vins.aspx . I wonder if it is a young vine cuvée. The important thing is that it is good.

This website is annoyingly non-comprehensive. It makes no mention of the excellent white La Croix Boissée nor of a very good lesser white Chinon from young Chenin vines.

Yes, too bad about the non-mention of the blancs.

I think that this might be the "Le Domaine" on the site, will compare labels when I get home tonight

Seems like a nice find to me Dale.
As usual Tim gets down to nitty-gritty! More info for all Loire-heads.
