WTN: Duval-Leroy Champagne NV 'Paris'

by David M. Bueker » Fri Feb 06, 2009 2:01 pm

A quick note from my snowbound stay in the English countryside outside of Bristol...

Lucky for me, the restaurant has decent Champagne available by the glass. It's fruity, has a bit of toast & some depth of baked apple character. It's quite lovely.

All right then...cheers!

James,

So you were the guy who bought the one copy of "Bob Dylan Sings Pagliacci". :)

The bottle is beautiful. The wine is actually as good as the bottle.

You guys are kidding, right? I agree that the Champagne is excellent, but the bottle...? I have no design sense at all, but I could come up with a better bottle design in about 10 minutes. That DL lable is absolutely uninspired.

Chacun a son label

Oh no, David. By any objective criteria the Duval-Leroy label is not "beautiful". In fact, it's not even attractive. That label is borderline ugly. If I remember correctly (don't have one in the house right now) the words "Duval-Leroy" are simply written in a rather non-descript block font and the label contains very little, if any, color. I win this one, David... go ahead and say it, "Sam wins".

James - You were yanking our chain, right?

Sam, are you talking about the regular Duval-Leroy bottle here or the "Paris"? The regular bottle is forgettable - but the "Paris" bottle is lovely (although I've never tried the wine - did consider buying it once when Binny's had it on sale in Chicago, but got distracted by some other wines).

Oops. I guess I missed the "Paris" part. I've only had the regular bottling. Thanks for pointing out my error, Salil.

David - Let's just forget about that saying "Sam wins" thing.

I was trying to figure out how to break it to you Sam...glad Salil did it instead.

FWIW - I like the regular Duval-Leroy labels for their simplicity, but would never consider them beautiful.

This could simply be a matter of different visual taste, but more likely bottle label variation. You know, a bottle exposed to sun in a store window fading its colors...or something like that. Or maybe there was more than one printing run of the labels, even though the producer swears they're all the same. Yeah, something like that.

It's not about the label.. it's about the deep blue bottle and LeRoy Neimann artwork!!!

Sorry, didn't intend incorrect use of the generic term "label" to detract from my parodic statement.

Parody appreciated... just clearing the air, so to speak.... :D
