WTN: Langhe "SuperPiedmont"?

by Brian K Miller » Fri Feb 06, 2009 2:02 pm

2001 Monsordo Cerretto purchased at WineStyles last year (another customer came in, tried the wine, and cleared them out...so, alas...no more.)

A Langhe "Superpiedmont" perhaps? Cab and Nebbiolo dominate. http://viewitaly.blogspot.com/2006/06/m ... -2000.html

Still...a very nice wine. Not all that "New World" in character to me, except for the noticeable alcohol (I got sleepy!)

Dark ruby color with pinkish-ruby rim. Nose is very interesting, with a distinct "rose petal" element-this does not really smell like cab at all, and to me, the Nebbiolo dominates the nose.

And, the palate. Definitely some cherry notes, with more rose petal. A bit of licorice as well-perhaps the Cabernet is showing here? Very restrained on fruit, with some good acidity. DEFINITELY some tannins on the finish, which is quite long. Kevin, one of the proprietors, commented that this wine is all about the finish.

Very interesting and unique wine. Not cheap ($40) but this is very cellarable and I might, some day, try it again. 91 points.
