WTN Hart's Wine Cellars 2007 Riesling

by Thomas » Sun Feb 08, 2009 12:36 pm

The other day, my wife and I lunched with Howie and his son, at Glenora Wine Cellars. It was a fine two hours--a pleasure to meet Howie--his son (Peter?) seems a smart, and lucid, young man (so, where did Howie go wrong?).

In addition to the benefit of meeting the Harts, Howie generously provided me with two bottles of his wine--my selection. I chose Riesling and Cabernet Franc. The Riesling is gone now; it made its way into our pleasure center alongside a four cheese pasta dish with spicy yellow tomato sauce. Fabulous pairing.

On its own, the Riesling was quite a star. With faint hints in the nose of that petroleum quality that I love creeping slowly into the wine, and with a mouthful of viscosity, plus undertones of mint and licorice, I'd put this wine next to any commercial Riesling of similar style. It is from Ontario fruit.

There seems rs to offset the acidity, but it was accomplished seamlessly, which makes me wonder if my initial rs guess at 1.5% was anywhere near close. I like it when a wine keeps me guessing...

My only complaint: the alcohol gets slightly in the way of the finish--but a minor issue.

Thomas,

Thanks for the note. I remember one of Howie's Rieslings from a couple of years back - it was stunningly well made. One of the best I've ever tried from around here, and certainly better even than certain commercial examples.

It was a true pleasure and an honor to share lunch with you and your wife. I'm pleased that you enjoyed the wine. Your taste buds are right on - 1.5% RS. And thanks for recommending the Glenora Brut. We opened it Saturday night at PauloCOOL. Very enjoyable.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

If I may say so myself, I am good at picking out rs levels. It's one reason I (used to) get into arguments over that tired subject of "dry" vs. "sweet."

Again, it was a pleasure to meet up with you. Even my misanthropic wife liked the two of you...

what may I ask is RS?

thanks! This may be the riesling i just received today. This was already reserved as select wine from our conversation. (for all of you people here - i probably used the wrong term in select. I meant it as special here within this context!)

Residual sugar.

The sugar that remains in the wine after fermentation and therefore can be perceived by the taster.

Absolutely not true. Everybody with a civil manner, and an interest in, or passion for, wine belongs here.

Frankly, Norman, I'm glad you asked that question about RS. While this time I happened to know the answer, you've encouraged me to ask questions more often.
