WTN: '07 Bogle "Sparkling" Chenin Blanc

by Mike Filigenzi » Mon Feb 09, 2009 10:43 am

Popped this reliable and inexpensive Clarksburg chenin last night as I needed some white wine to go in the stew and figured I'd drink the rest of the bottle over the next couple of days. Runs about $12 a bottle, IIRC.

Pale straw color in the glass. Frothy mousse. Nutty aromas on the nose. In the mouth, it's chalky-dry with a bit of almond and a lingering finish. Not a bad sparkler for the price,

Funny thing is, it's not supposed to be a sparkling wine.

Thanks, Mike. I didn't even know that Bogle made a sparkler; I'll keep an eye out for it. I've read some pretty negative things about Bogle on these pages, their merlot in particular, but I've always found them to be consistently OK, not great, just OK.

Thank you, Rahsaan - I either missed that comment or read it but it didn't register. Mistake on the bottling end, maybe a little yeast got in?

I guess what I'd say is that it re-fermented and that it was surprisingly not bad. Certainly better than Andre or Cook's versions of sparkling wine.

A strange experience.

Hey...if a 1986 White Zinfandel (a gag gift) can be "not bad," so can a sparkling Chenin Blanc!
