It's no crime to step back to an earlier age.

I've read the critical reviews of Mont-Redon (mostly RMP), and how they've wasted the terroir for so many years. After drinking the 2001 I don't get the criticism.

No it's not big and extracted (though it does pack a bit of a punch - or maybe it's partly the jet lag), but it has layers of aromas and flavors, a lingering and gentle finish and impeccable balance. It's lovely.

David, I see you had a great time in London with Nicos and the folks. Lucky you..but 2 corked wines to finish up? Bizarre!

I haven't had the '01 Mont-Redon, but the '98 left me severely underwhelmed. Yes, it's not a big-framed CdP, but neither is Vieux Telegraphe or Bois de Boursan, yet the Mont-Redon also struck me as being quite simple, lacking in the complexity that provides interest to me in the S. Rhone. I haven't had many other years of Mont-Redon, so perhaps that was just an outlier, but it hasn't motivated me to try many more bottles.

I once owned a few bottles of the '98. It did not sing for me either, so I ran through the bottles quickly. This 2001 is much better, though it is still not in the current CNdP mold.
