WTN: 2007 Toscolo Vernaccia di San Gimignano

2007 Toscolo Vernaccia di San Gimignano

Nose: Overchilled before opening, so I picked up nothing at all initially. On warming there were some muted pear and floral note.

Taste: Comparatively low acidity. Some nice pear and berry notes with a little bit of burnt leaf. Not the boldness and richness that I love in a good Vernaccia.

Food Pairing: Crab cakes. The Vernaccia actually went quite well with the crab cakes. The burnt leaf note fit in nicely with the savory character of the crab. A little more richness on the part of the wine probably would have helped. Will definitely try the pairing again.

Great Sam, we thought this might be a good match!
Last night after a hectic night at the Grill with all the Valentines lovee-dovees, I had the Gray Monk PG (Okanagan) with some cakes. Very fair match.

AAMOI, 3 bottles of the Branaire Malbec were sold last night. Pretty unusual I`d say but then Malbec seems to be drawing a crowd.

Bob,

Next time I will probably try the crab with a little heftier Vernaccia. I have a Fugnano Vernaccia in there that I need to break out pretty soon.

Yes, Malbec is big right now. I have been enjoying some of the lower end stuff from Argentina. I've never had the Branaire.

Just opened my bottle, same the `07. Needs to be not too chilled, spot on. I am not finding your burnt leaf character...yet! Crab cakes should work for sure!

Glad you liked it, Bob. Did you try it with crab cakes?

The crab cakes from the Grill (my recipe) were rather bland this time around. Needed more seasoning for sure.
I did not think the match was as good as some of the others I have tried, but wine was very enjoyable. I will post asap, fund-raising for inner-city kids outings right now/all week!
