WTN: Trimbach Riesling Réserve 2007

by Saina » Thu Feb 26, 2009 7:06 pm

Trimbach Riesling Réserve 2007 12,5% abv; 5g/l RS; 7,1g/l acidity; 19,20€

Greenish gold. A tightly coiled spring: exciting tensions and potential energy just waiting to be released. Mineral and citric, shy but still very exciting. Great structure and grip. For what is obviously a closed wine, I still found much to love and even poured myself a second glass before forgetting in the fridge for a day or two! I haven't seen much news on '07 in Alsace. Good was it? Or does Trimbach just rock?

Do you usually/often just drink one glass and then leave wines in the refrigerator over night?

With young Riesling, yes. Especially with producers like Trimbach that demand age and can be austere. I don't think most other grapes work well with such exposure to air, however.

It was decent, but many harvested too early fearing a new 2006 - spring and summer had been difficult - but the more conscientious growers waited and that paid off. Gewurz was the most successful, and Pinot Gris the least. I have not yet tasted this particular wine, but your reaction does not surprise. (In fact, some of the Osterberg grapes normally intended for CFE might have ended up here. I will ask Pierre T when I get a chance.)

Greetings from Sweden / Fredrik L

Fredrik, thanks for the overview! The wine opened up a bit overnight but is still tightly coiled up. And it is still loveable.

I agree that riesling holds up remarkably well in comparison to other grapes but somehow I can't limit myself to drinking only one or two glasses the first night. I'll sometimes save a bit that's left and enjoy it the next day. But if it's really going to be that tough on the first day then I usually don't open it. Although a couple of years ago I was quite different, not even taking a sip of my riesling until it had been open more than 24 hours.

Rahsaan, I think that largely young Riesling will be fine with a couple hours of air. But there are certain producers, and Trimbach is certainly one, that need longer. But as one living alone, Riesling really is the ideal wine: sometimes I really don't want more than a glass or two, yet I know that a young Riesling will last in great condition through however many days it takes me to drink through the bottle. And best of all, I can keep several bottles open at once! :)

I've tried many times (in vain) to explain to my wife that the first glass is really just mouthrinse and that I don't actually start to properly taste the wine until the second or third glass.

That foreign concept stumped me too... That is never an ex ante, only an ex post if the wine isn't good.
