Help identifying a mystery 1994 Bordeaux

by Paul B. » Sat Feb 28, 2009 9:09 pm

Attached is a picture (snapshot of a video screen - sorry!) of a 1994 Bordeaux. This is some years ago and the bottle is long, long gone ... and silly me never thought of taking a close-up of the label for posterity!!

All I remember is that it was definitely a '94, and was on the light side, but every bit a pleasant, tannic, dusty, blackcurranty and lightly earthy Bordeaux. Most likely it was not an expensive wine.

I can't make out the letters but there are some identifying features - e.g. the general markings on the label, the items pictured there, the split main top label and smaller lower section; also, the capsule, which is dark garnet in colour with some kind of goldish ring at its bottom.

The bottle was purchased most likely in Ontario, and the year was 1998.

Any general pointers from folks who might know what this is would be appreciated. I could then research more online and pin it down.

Thanks in advance.

Can't help much, Paul. It looks somewhat like a Greysac to me, but that's only because it's a fairly plain label with black lettering on a white background and meets your criteria for inexpensive. I don't own any of it to go look and compare to your photo.

I think it might be a Chateau Puy Blanquet.

Short of getting CTU involved I think Drew has the best potential match.

I think so too--at least, all the dark spots line up.

Thank you all folks!!

Drew - you are spot on. That label looks like an absolute match. Thank you for solving this mystery for me.

I had begun to think maybe it was a Chateau Haut-Gilbert based on what I could make out from the lettering, but I couldn't find anything about Haut-Gilbert online save a mailing address.

With gratitude ...

Thank you all. In response I must say that in 38 years of law enforcement it was my most "challenging" case.
I have changed my avatar accordingly.
