WTN: Any Piesport in a storm

by David M. Bueker » Mon Mar 02, 2009 8:10 pm

Just popped open a bottle of 2007 Reusher-Haart Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Spatlese (AP#12), and it's essence of honey over peaches. Oh yum! Laura likes it as well. Decent, if not outstanding structure.

Sounds very tasty - not that different from the St. Urbans-Hof I had last week from this vineyard, which may have had a bit more peach and a little less honey than your Haart.

New producer to me. But I REALLY liked the '07 R. Haart PGold, so vineyard apparently was in good spot in '07

Given the relative prices - both the Reuscher-Haart and St. Urbans-Hof must be considered as high QPR buys compared to Rheinhold Haart.

Off topic but still German. Check out this `53 Liebfraumilch that Nicos posted on elsewhere! (Are we allowed to post stuff like this from Flickr?).

No problem posting a link Bob.

I read some comments by Nicos elsewhere.

So David, what are the origins of this wine? Where did the juice come from, must have been from a specific area/vineyard?

Mywine or hte one Nicos reported on? To be honest I'm not sure I want to get into a long discussion of Nicos' bottle.

Thanks for the post. Piesporter was my Mom's favorite wine and your post, David, made me realize that I don't think I've had any since she died several years ago. I'll remedy that tomorrow when I go to return that '05 Bordeaux we were posting about earlier today.

I finished off the bottle Wednesday night & while it had developed a sort of soft focus it was still quite delicious.

I'll second that recommendation about the St. Urbans-Hof. I had a bottle of it a month or so ago and it was simply lovely ... and quite reasonably priced.

Hi David,
Reuscher-Haart can indeed make delicious wines that age also quite well
(forgot to mention this Estate in our report on great producers from the Goltröpfchen this month. clearly an omission).
Thanks for drawing indirectly my attention to that!

Jean - did you know that they have gone over to Vino-Lok, at least for wines shipped to the USA.

No, I didn't know that.

Vino-Lok is quite popular in Germany and even GG have been bottled using this attractive looking solution. However, many (larger) Estates provide the customer with the choice of closure, which I find a good solution (although not easy for the maker as he has to anticipate how much he will sell using which closure)

I am not sure I would rely on Vino-Lok closure for long-term cellaring. Maybe I am totally wrong here (if someone has information on Vino-Lok and aging ...), but this little plastic does not give me the impression of being capable of holding up for 30 years.

I am probably going to take some bottles (I have many vino-lok wines from variuous producers: Reuscher-Haart, Kerpen, Jakob Schneider, Salomon in Austria to name a few) and lay them down just to see what happens.
