WTN: The Steading 2005

Torbreck
Barossa Valley

A blend of Grenache (60 per cent), Mataro (20) and Shiraz.

Dark red in the glass.

A very big and complex nose: black olives, fleshy jammy fruit, red licorice, spicy, peppery, slightly sweet, freshly sharpened pencils.

Medium weight, tangy, rich raspberry and cherry fruit, intense, tarry, black licorice, spicy, sweet, light roasted-charred notes, red licorice, with a bit of an edge toward the end.

With time, the fruit began to taste old and stewed and the wine became a bit harsh.

Tangy, spicy, stewed fruit on the finish.

Certainly a bruiser of a wine, it worked quite well with BBQed steaks.
