WTN: 2006 Willi Schaefer Spatlese/2006 St. Innocent

Out for dinner with my folks at our favorite pan-Asian BYO.

2006 Willi Schaefer Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese
One whiff of this wine and I thought "wow - botrytis auslese", but the spicy, honeyed nose was merely a tease, as the palate was much more focused, fruity and minerally that the nose suggested. Certainly sweet on entry, the wine finished almost perfectly dry. Impeccably balanced, the wine worked with my sushi appetizer (the sweetness playing off the saltiness of soy and the richness of fatty tuna) and was a very fine partner to red snapper in a spicy sauce.

2006 St. Innocent Pinot Noir 'Villages Cuvee'
Plastic cork, so drink up. It showed very well, with vibrant, ripe fruit and good framing acidity. This is not in any way Bourgogne, but it competes very favorably in the same price niche, and it's quite food friendly. I like this wine very much, just hate the closure.

WS Spatlese #12? Sounds wonderful, particularly with the sushi.

My limited funds only allowed me to grab 3 at the time (as well as a handful of #10 and #14 ausleses), so I'll have to continue leave it to the imagination for a while.
