Can someone help me?

by Eran Cohen » Wed Apr 01, 2009 6:36 am

Hi,
I was looking for kosher wines for passover and I came through a kosher wine site I never saw.
I'd like to know if any of you know this site, the prices looks good and some of them looks too good and I would like to get your opinion if I should buy there.
(sometime when it's too good it's fishy)
The site name is - http://www.mykosherwine.com
If you can get back to me today I'll appreciate it, I'd like to order wines for passover and I need to do it as soon as I can.
Thanks in advance,
Eran

Apologies if it's legit, but this post looks fishy to me... Won't click the link unless the poster is someone I trust.

Did you know that Spam is not Kosher?

I find it hard to believe that someone who just stumbled upon a site needed to post identical question on multiple sites.

It someone wants a REPUTABLE source for kosher wine, there are plenty of reputable stores with good selections. K & D and Skyview in NY are somewhat specialists, but most big stores like Zachys, Winex, WHWC carry a large selection. Places like Chambers have smaller selection, but well chosen.

I see there's an identical post on Rogov's forum, and Rogov says it's legit (vs. a shill) so our apologies to Mr. Cohen if we leapt to a wrong conclusion.

It's certainly possible that Eran is a real poster. My advice would still be the same- plenty of established stores have good kosher selections. But I'm still skeptical. The same post is on other fora, too. And first time posters on places like chowhound touting the same site.

The site may be legit but the post could very well be from an over-zealous employee of either the site or a PR firm hired by them. We've seen this sort of thing before, one of the reasons why a first time poster should introduce himself and establish some kind of bona fide before asking for advice. I dunno, something about the wording smells fishy to me...

Had not considered that and largely because many who seek out kosher wines find that various internet sales-points offer larger selections than most stores. An open question.........now y'all have me curious as well.

It looks ominous for a number of reasons: (1) Because the guy uses the term, “fishy,” potentially to rub his victim’s nose in, should it be the case. (2) Anyone who needs an answer immediately is usually on the con. (3) He’s (if it is a he) treating the group familiarly, like a group of old friends. (4) Bad grammar, or typos, in an introductory message suggests that it is coming from another country. (5) A Jew writing Passover with a lower case “p” is like a Catholic writing “Jesus” in lower case. (6) “Sometime (sic) when it's too good it's fishy” is a Yogiism, which also suggests the guy is from another country, or planet; only Yogi can say stuff like “The thing is so fishy it is starting to smell.” (7) The guy’s name is too Jewish. Yogi would probably agree.

Covert, I find some of those reasons ...um..weird.
In any case, I'd guess the people behind the site are Jewish (I've never seen a kosher food site that wasn't) and in US (LA to be precise). And I'd guess they're the ones making the posts. This appeared yesterday AM on Gary V's forum (I just googled Mykosherwine):

I was looking for kosher wines for passover and I came through a kosher wine site I never saw.
I'd like to know if any of you know this site, the prices looks too low and I would like to get your opinion if I should buy there.
The site name is - mykosherwine (com)
If you can get back to me today I'll appreciate it, I'd like to order wines for passover and I need to do it as soon as I can.
Thanks in advance,
Gefen

Well, I guess it's possible that "Eran" and "Gefen" both just stumbled upon a site, decided the prices were so low they just had to post about it. Uh huh.

A quick look showed that the nice '01 Giscours is cheaper at Zachys than this site. I'd add that if a business think stealth marketing (lying) is good advertising, I'd be hesitant to trust them as to provenance, etc.

Exactly, and why I used the word "if" and "shill" in my last comment. :)

Good detective work, Dale! No more "if" about it.

So many assumptions...

Yes, I have a bad grammar, I'm an Israeli
And yes, I need an immediate answer because Passover is near and I need to order the wine in time for "sedder"...
And yes, I asked from few friends of mine to help me find if it's OK to buy there and sent them the same wording I use... (Again, I need to do it fast, sedder is near)
I'm always looking for new sites for new deals (usually their prices are low to attract buyers) and this is the reason I don't always buy in the well known old sites.
Even though you treat me as the "enemy" it's ok, it's not a bad thing to be skeptic when you surf the net, this is the reason I posted my post, I needed to know if I can trust mykosherwine site.

No hard feelings and thanks.

Eran.

The suggestion that the name was "too Jewish" made me smile. Both Eran and Cohen are quite common first and family names in Israel and I'd even guess that we might find 100 Eran Cohen's in the country.

That the grammar and spelling are a bit "off" indicates only that the person's native language is not English. And, as is said, spelling doesn't count on the internet.

Me, I may be sceptical as all get out about Israel's new government but choose to accept this post at face value. I look forward to "meeting" Eran both here and at Rogov's Place.

Very gentlemanly, and I admire you for it. We certainly didn't mean to be unfriendly or unhelpful to Mr. Cohen. But that said, we've been doing this a LONG time, and I'm sure that both you and Mr. Cohen will understand that our experience is that when someone goes to all the trouble of joining multiple websites (which, like ours, often require non-instantaneous pre-registration) to post the same question under different names and which asks for opinions about a retail website (link always provided), about 100% of the time it has turned out to be the retailer himself or sometimes a PR firm hired on his/her behalf making the post. So where we really wouldn't mind a new retailer coming to us and announcing their business and saying look we have something you might want or need--all of us who love wine love good retailers!--it's the pretending not to be who/what they are that creates bad feelings, not the least of which is mistrust. And there are few products in which trust in your seller is more important.

Just saying....

Indeed, well said Jenise.
I'm even more convinced by "Eran's" (aka Regev, aka Moti, aka Gefen) response (which felt the need to plug the site and it's "low prices" again).
My money's on a sleazy operation.

But you know what? Theoretically, any of these possible spammers could represent a perfectly legitimate and well-run business with nothing more than a naive person at the marketing desk who has no idea how internet communities actually work. Theoretically--not so easy to give the benefit of the doubt, though, to someone who uses mutliple names, is it?

Daniel,
I just googled "mykosherwine"
Gefen was the name on Winelibrary's forums. "Regev" was on a Jewish forum, another on Chowhound, etc. All of the posts were made by first time posters. It really would require willing suspension of disbelief to think these were random searches for information (or in a couple of cases "hey, just wanted to share this great site with great prices!").
As Jenise noted, I'd say 100% of these instances I can remember (in a dozen years of posting on various fora) where a first time poster just had to share about a new site they just "found" it's been stealth marketing. And it stinks.

Dale, Hi....

Thanks for the research. As much as it hurts, I am now ready to suspend my initial optimism. I suppose with my sometimes naivete that I should be grateful that I didn't invest with Bernie Madoff!
