Link to a rather disappointing note in Rogov's Place:

Too bad. I'd blame the cork, I enjoyed the '79 Gruaud a few years ago, and have one left I hope is better than your experience. With the exception of '82 and '86, I've never had a GREAT GL, but lots of solid ones over the years. Thanks for notes

I think the 1983 is an excellent wine.

Drank a 82 about a month ago, still full of life and drinking great. :)

'81 (en magnum), '82, '83, '86, '88 and '89 all good to excellent for me .... but no real table-lifters amongst them. Solid, reliable but rarely thrilling if you ask me.
Cheers,

David

Matt,
I like the '83, I think I brought to our '83 tasting, have one more left. But that night the Palmer was the GREAT wine. I just think the '82 and '86 are the only ones that are total "wow" wines when they're on (David, I'd say those two vintages are capable of being thrilling). In the '80s GL is one of the most reliable Bdx, though

Well, Palmer hit it out of the park in '83 (along with Margaux IMO), so I can't say that I'm at all surprised that it outclassed the G-L. Like you, I've only been wowed by the '82 and '86 G-L, but I have heard great things about the '59 (hint hint) and some have raved about the '75 IIRC.
