WTN: 2005 Ch. Fonbel

by Jim Grow » Thu Apr 16, 2009 9:43 pm

I unfortunately opened this with venison steakes tonight and it was enjoyable but still too unevolved. With lots of cherry fruit, the tannins were a bit astringent. The balance and extract level indicated to me that with a few (3-5) years of age this could be a beauty but definitely not a sipper now.

Thanks for the note, Jim. While in general de Fonbel does not show the sheer class of its stablemate Moulin Staint-Georges, it is, nevertheless, an excellent Saint-Emilion. The 2001 is even an outstanding wine. Fortunately, I still have a few bottles of 1998, 2000, and 2001 in my cellar.
