WTN: 2007 Kabinett

by Dale Williams » Thu May 28, 2009 4:01 pm

Grilled some leftover hot dogs, served with usual toppings plus some salad and grilled squash,. Wine was the 2007 JJ Christoffel (Christoffel Erben) Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Kabinett. Brighter and less creamy than its Spatlese brother, light to medium bodied with apple, blood orange, and strawberry. Not especially minerally, but clean and tasty, no shortage of acid here. B+/B

I haven't tasted widely in 2007, but I'm a bigger fan than others here based on recent comments. I'd say overall I prefer to 2005 & 2006. Chacun a son gout (or German equivalent)

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

From my point of view,a B+/B from you is a pretty good mark, Dale, your disclaimer notwithstanding
Urz Wurz might well be my favorite vineyard in Germany..I see the wine has the signature strawberry notes..will put this on my to buy list..
Thanks for the notes..I usually calibrate pretty closely to your tasting notes.

Glad it did well for you. It hasn't succumbed to the screw cap reduction demons promised by Mr. Gilman?

Didn't know there's been criticism of Christoffel's wines under screwcap. I've had the 06 and 07 Treppchen Spatlesen both under screwcap as well as a couple of his recent Kabinetts and the only one that showed a touch of reductive character was the 06 Treppchen - where it blew off with 5 minutes in the glass and turned into a really great wine.
