1999 Barolo, Aurelio Settimo (La Morra):
I need to confess that I am not a huge fan of Nebbiolo based wines, but try to appreciate them from time to time. This past weekend was one such time, and I must admit this was a very fine bottle. Mid-carmine with just a hint of brick. Classic Barolo nose, with hints of ash and dark fruit. Not any sign of oak on the nose or palate, I believe this to be a traditional producer. Lots of deep, tarry fruit well balanced with some substantial tannins. Very drinkable now, but might have another 5-10 years if you are so inclined. I have a single vineyard (Rocche) bottling from the same vintage, which I am now inclined to hold onto for a few more years.
