WTN: Middle Mosel and Marlborough Rieslings

by Salil » Thu May 28, 2009 10:14 pm

Dinner with friends this evening; cooked a mix of Thai and South Indian food and Riesling of course was the ideal accompaniment.

2006 Alfred Merkelbach Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese
Light gold colour with a Sauternes-like nose showing spicy honey, apricot and orange flavours and softer mineral and lime elements with more air. Full bodied in the mouth but not as sweet as the aromatics suggest. There's ripe mango and white fruited flavours up front, but tarter lime, herbal and salty flavours kick in on the back end and the finish is all lavender and lime and slightly bittersweet. Interesting wine although the botrytis seemed a little awkward in here; no idea how something like this might age.

2003 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese AP#11
Holy crap - seriously, after one sip of this I had to check the label again to confirm it was an 03. Just an incredibly beautiful Mosel Riesling. Apples, limes, pear, slate, flowers; lots of depth, so incredibly light and elegant in the mouth with plenty of acidity and a silky mouthfeel (Charles commented that it felt as if the wine was floating over your tongue). Superb wine, even moreso when you take the vintage into context. I need to drink more Schaefer!

2006 Pyramid Valley Lebecca Vineyard Riesling
From Marlborough, NZ, and 8.5% alcohol. Once the slight reduction on the nose blows off, this really feels like a good Pfalz wine - bright pear, melon, lime and salty aromas, slightly sweet and very tropical on the palate with lots of guava, pear and some kiwifruit flavours over a bed of minerals. Good acidity underneath and finishes with just a slight touch of sweetness with an interesting note of watermelon emerging on the back end. Very nice and great value - Garagiste nailed this one.

There are some excellent low alcohol rieslings coming out of Marlborough and other parts of the South Island - I tried this against the Fromm a while back and did prefer the shimmering racy acidity of the Fromm over the Pyramid Valley (I'm trying to imagine what minerals the bed might be made of).

Have you seen any of the Fromm wines in the USA yet?

Agreed - I've really liked what Lawson's Dry Hills and Stoneleigh have done in the past (the LDH '04 Dry Riesling is what got me really hooked into Riesling), and recently had a Craggy Range Fletcher Vineyard Riesling that was absolutely stunning - probably the best NZ white I've had yet.

Not at retail (but I haven't looked hard). Did have the opportunity to try a Fromm La Strada Pinot Noir once that Thor Iverson opened - unfortunately that was corked.

Sue,

Is Melness highly regarded within NZ? I've had a couple that I really liked.

Was, yes. The couple that started Melness formed a very good relationship with their three growers in the Waipara and Burnham areas of Canterbury and they had possibly the most passionate Riesling winemakers in New Zealand - Matthew and Lynnette from Pegasus Bay, make the wine. The 2005 in particular was outstanding and the 2006 was an excellent follow on.

Melness vineyard was started their vineyard as a hobby and when the owners realised Riesling wouldn't perform on their site (Pinot Noir did better), they formed these relationships. However they retired and the brand was snapped up by Kahurangi - I believe that Matthew & Lynette were still going to make the Riesling but I did hear that the vineyard source may have changed - the original sites for the Melness possibly now going into the Main Divide. But what's happened to Melness Riesling, I don't know as the last one I saw was from the 2006 vintage.

Cheers,
Sue
