Didn't realize I still had any of these sitting around in the basement, but I came across one last night. It clocks in at 14.5% alcohol and I paid somewhere in the $24 range for it. Opened it last night, drank some, corked the bottle, put it in the fridge, and I'm drinking more of it tonight.
Medium yellow color. Nose-wise, it's lost the peachy-floral viognier aromas and has developed more of a waxy citrus smell. There's a subtle hint of some fruit and maybe just a touch of oxidation (which hadn't increased on day two). Taste-wise, it's a pretty intense wine. Initially, there's a little honeyed smoothness that's more feel than taste, and some of that waxy-citrus thing. Then the acidity kicks in and the it all seems to swell into your mouth. Finishes intensely, with acidity, a bit of warmth, some slight sourness, and a little fruit on top of it all.
Very interesting wine. This is probably the oldest viognier I've ever had, so I have no idea of what it's "supposed" to taste like. Reminds me a little of older chenin or maybe roussanne. It held together very well on the second evening, so I would guess this stuff could age for a while longer. I'd be very curious to hear what others with more aged white wine experience would think of it. (Guess I'd better root around the basement to see if I have any more of it.)
