WTN: '07 Heron Hill Semi-Dry Riesling

2007 Heron Hill, New York, Semi-Dry Riesling ($13.99 U.S.). Alcohol level: 11.5%; residual sugar: 2.5%. Grapes came from vineyards at five different Finger Lakes; Lake Erie; and the North Fork of LI! Didn’t know they grew Riesling on Long Island!

The wine gives you apricots and peaches on the nose and upfront. There is more stone fruit and vibrant acidity in the complex middle, and it provides a lovely finish.

We matched it with grilled beer brats and onions in rolls, bourbon and brown sugar grillin’ beans, and salad with vinaigrette and crumbled blue cheese. Riesling is supposed to hold up to a dinner like this; particularly an off dry one. This one didn’t quite. It was delightful before and after eating though.

Yeah, I've noticed several of the Heron Hill bottlings carry the "New York" appellation and I guess we can see why. Wonder why a winery in the Finger Lakes would need to go to LI and Erie for riesling? Especially in a good vintage like '07, where there wasn't much damage or loss.

Maybe this will answer the question. The New York appellation wines are Heron Hill’s “second label”, “Game Bird” Label.
