WTN: Altos Las Hormigas Malbec 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Sat Jun 20, 2009 6:10 pm

Mendoza

Dark purple, almost black in the glass.

Spicy, fruity berry nose.

Medium weight, rich blackberries, black cherry, spicy, tarry, tangy acidity, some bitterness, rather tannic and drying.

A drying finish.

This wine needs a bit of time.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian).

This has always been a poster child for "modern" malbec, made from overripe grapes and acidified.
"I went on a rigorous diet that eliminated alcohol, fat and sugar. In two weeks, I lost 14 days." Tim Maia, Brazilian singer-songwriter.

This is generally available in the States for ten dollars or less. I've recommended it for years to people looking for a really good ten dollar wine. Recently the Wall Street Journal named it as the best of tasting and best value in a column on Malbecs. I don't know if I agree that it's that good, but as an everyday wine it's hard to beat.
