Simply amazing.

The only real signs of age are textural - all the angles have become curves. The color is bright and clear. The nose carries ripe and sweet berry/cherry notes with none of the expected tea leaf/tobacco/cedar/rose petal/claret patina of an aged Zin. The fruit is sweet and focused in the mouth with completely integrated tannins and acids - a study in harmony.

Perfect with grilled tri-tip, tiny roasted Yukons and a simple leafy green salad and held up beautifully through the entire meal.

Wondrous.

Allan, it's great to see you again! Sounds like an incredible bottle. Have you had other Ridge Zins of similar age?

Thanks. This bottle conjured memories of a 73 Geyserville I had at a similar age.
But keep in mind - this was Dick Sherwin's wine, not Mr. Ridge - and, of course, at this age, there are no great wines, (all together now) only great bottles.

Allan
Out of interest (but not agenda!) what was the alc % on this (if stated)?
It does sound a great wine (and with gas left in the tank)

Thanks for reminding me that there used to be another Lytton Springs. It's there in the fog in my brain--I discovered Lytton Springs before I discovered Ridge!

Hello Allan!

Great to see info on the older Lytton wines.

Of course that sparks the dilemma with the late '90s gems from Ridge (i.e. 97 and 99): drink them now when they are so tasty, or lay a few down for the loooong sleep. Maybe both!

Ian - I don't have the bottle, but have inquired. There's a tasting note in the Gang of Pour archives for the 1978 Lytton Springs Winery Sonoma County Zinfandel - the alcohol was 12.8%. In those days, they made wine from purchased fruit (Sonoma County label) and the estate fruit (Valley Vista Vineyard). Since it was all Northern Sonoma County fruit, I think it's fair to guess the alcohol level of the Valley Vista wine was not too far from the other. I'll let you know if I hear differently.

David - A delicious dilemma, indeed. While rummaging through the cellar a week ago, I came across my case of 99 Geyserville. It's not been opened yet.

I'm just sayin'...

MAN!, it was such a surprise to see your name this evening, and like Jenise said, (or intimated) welcome back. AFAIK, Mo'Cool 2009 is a go, and I sure hope to see you there. Speaking of the LS what is your opinion of the 2005 and 2006 versions?

Thanks, Bob. If the stars align, I'll be back in the kitchen with my other brother Alan.

It's been awhile since I've tasted the 05 and 06 LS, so I'll defer an opinion until I have a chance to revisit them - perhaps this weekend.

Good to see you here, Bree! And nice to get a note on a Ridge zin with some real age on it.

Mike,
It's not a Ridge Zin. It was made by Lytton Springs Winery, now long gone and whose vineyards have been incorporated into Ridge's Lytton Springs Vyd. Ridge's operation on Lytton Springs Rd is on the site of the former Lytton Springs Winery. Their wines had a black label with a bunch of grapes on it.

Mark - You're right, of course. I wasn't thinking there. That was even brought up earlier in the thread (not to mention that I visited the Lytton Springs winery several times back before Ridge owned them).

The Rest Of The Story.....

by TomHill » Fri Jun 26, 2009 3:19 pm

Richard Sherwin, owner of the original LyttonSprings, was a publishing mogul down in the LA area. He published a wine magazine in the mid-late '70's titled Wine World. A mag I wrote an article or two for.
And I was pretty active on the WineWorld WebSite as well, stirring the pot as I've been known to do occasionally.
The Editor of WineWorld was one DeeSindt. And she was drop-dead gorgeous...at least from the revealing pics that were published in the mag. She & I had several
encounters (not in person...via e-mail) on wine subjects. The most notable was my response to her blanket condemnation of the rain-besotted '72 vintage that none of them would
go out beyond 10 yrs or so. I claimed the Ridge MonteBello would easily go that length and probably 20 yrs or more. She pretty much raked me over the coals in defense of her
original claim, in print in WineWorld.
A winemaker friend from the area was visiting Sherwin and Sindt down at his LA publishing site. As he waited for them to appear, he started poking around and observed
pallets of....porno magazines. He speculated that Sherwin made his money in the porno biz and that his wife, Dee, was one of his porno queens. I, of course, have never laid eyes
on such tawdry publications...so wouldn't know!! :-)
So...now you know the rest of the story..as could only be told by TomHill. :-)

I remember it well, although I no longer have any bottles. Nice label too!

Maybe we should have a tasting of defunct California wineries?

I've got a Garretson Syrah that I'll happy contribute to the event. Surprisingly, most of the CA wines I have are from extant wineries.

Y'know, Tom, I actually did ask myself what in the Tom Hill was going on with that chronology, but I decided to let it pass in deference to my elder's delicate sensibilities :P I do the same with me sainted mother's "senior moments."
